    Call Outs for Court Overtime

    Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 08:59 PM [General]

I'm looking for some advice. My department recently requested us to call the day before we are schedualed for court on overtime to see if we are needed. I feel if I have to call on my day off I should be compensated for this. It also presents a problem for schedualing personal time. Am I working or not??? Anyone have any advice??

    Thanks

    Rick

Speak to your PBA representative and check your contract. Let he or she address it with the Chief.

I feel if you are required to call, then you should be paid your call out rate. 2 or 3 hours. AS PER YOUR CONTRACT.

This sounds similar to a "standby" or "oncall" which creates another problem for the town such as compensating for the call and your "on call" time. I agree with bubblemaker. One way towns get around this entire issue is by creating a "court liason" where no officers show up or call except for the most important matters or trials. Only one officer shows up at court as the "liason" representing all. This really sounds crazy but towns are doing it. Like bubblemaker suggested, check your contract.
